Cumberland Pencils had been manufacturing pencils in their Keswick factory since the 19th Century however after 175 years, production was moved to a purpose built factory fitted with the latest manufacturing equipment. As such a historical and prestigious company Derwent House was official opened by Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh on 5th June 2008.

 

In addition to the engineering of the building superstructure GJA were responsible for the civil and structural engineering of the site works, including  drainage, car parking, access roads and hard standings.

 

The 44,000 sq ft building was designed as a 38m clear span steel portal framed structure, constructed on traditional pad and strip footings with a ground bearing slab. A 4,000 sq ft mezzanine office area at the front of the building was designed compositely with a metal deck slab.
